Hi everyone.
I am at present undertaking an MA research project looking at the
qualitative experiences of disabled graduates of working age with
Asperger’s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy in seeking and gaining employment.
The reason I am writing to this forum is that I have found it very hard to
find reseach materials or easily accessible (i.e. Internet journal, PDF
files) regarding the current employment situation of those with Cerebral
Palsy and Asperger's Syndrome. I am looking particular for any recent
research materials, journal articles, reports, employment statistics for
these two groups etc. Really anything that will help me to write a current
literature review section for the study.
Also I have found it very hard to gain access to the two groups for my
study. This is despite approaching their respected organisations for help
i.e. Scope for those with CP. any suggestions from forum members in
regards approaching other organisations for access to these groups would
be most welcome.
My research at the moment is very much one sided having gained an
organisational and stakeholder perspective e.g. trade union, but lacks in
a qualitative understanding of the experiences of looking for and seeking
employment of those with CP/AS.
Any research materials or advise will be most welcome
Please find a copy of my research proposal for your information
Kind regards
Huseyin

The qualitative experiences of disabled graduates of working age with
Asperger’s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy in seeking and gaining employment
Researcher
MA Employment Studies and HRM postgraduate student with Cerebral Palsy.
Research Objectives
The project will have the following four key objectives.
•To explore the experiences of people with Asperger’s Syndrome and
Cerebral palsy and whether they encounter similar or different problems in
finding employment.
•To identify the perceptions of people with Asperger’s Syndrome and
Cerebral Palsy regarding the impact of the Disability Discrimination Act
(1995) on disability equality within the workplace.
•To identify what employers and disability organisations are doing to
improve equal opportunities for disabled people diagnosed with Cerebral
Palsy and Asperger’s Syndrome within the workplace.
•To identify examples of good organisational practice within the public,
private and voluntary sectors from the point of view of HR practitioners
and disabled people diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Asperger’s Syndrome.
Research Methodology:
The research will take place between February 2007 and January 2008 . The
methodology will comprise of two main stages based on primary research
though a combination of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews .
The project will firstly seek to gain the ‘bottom-up’ view of the
experiences of disabled people with Asperger’s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy
in seeking and gaining employment. A total of twelveake
place with 2-4 key informants working with groups which work with disabled
people to research their views on how the employment opportunities for
disabled people should be improved and what is considered ‘good practice’
within a policy context.
Secondly in order to gain a ‘top down’ view of what ‘good practice’
organisations are doing to increase the participation rates of disabled
people within their firms. A number of research interviews will also be
conducted with HRM practitioners from ‘good practice’ employers drawn from
the list of organisations that are currently members of the Employers
Forum on Disability, specifically the “Disability Standard 2007” and
the “Gold Card” schemes. A representative from the HRM/Diversity
Departments of at least three organisations will be selected for
interview. This will represent one company from each of the public,
private and voluntary sectors respectively. A national overview of ‘good
practice’ in the field and the way forward will be obtained by an
interview with a ‘key informant’ from both the Employers’ Forum on
Disability and a Trade Union Officer.
