As an undergraduate I arranged with my LEA to appoint my own notetakers
directly. At the end of each month the notetakers submitted invoices, which
were copied and forwarded to the LEA for payment. As far as I was
concerned the notetakers were self-employed and invoiced me for the work
they had undertaken. In the same way as the taxi driver who took me to and
from university.
The importance of choice and informed choice is central to the concept of
independent living, as argued for instance by Barnes and Mercer, and this
includes support and assistance. Therefore, I would argue, enabling
students to appoint their own assistance facilitates increased
participation, equality and greater inclusion.
