On a slightly different note, did anyone catch the Radio 4 coverage of
Silbury Hill at 6 o'clock yesterday? Apparently we now know why Silbury
Hill was constructed - solely for the purpose of putting a medieval
fortress on top!
Also, we learned that the recent work has been carried out by
'historians' (rather than archaeologists). I was left with the
impression either that the journalist involved was completely ignorant,
or that they'd been badly briefed!

An adit is a horizontal entrance: a shaft is a vertical entrance.
