Young Cultural Creators Projects
Fee £4,000.00
Time scale Work to take place from November 2007 - March 2008
Deadline for applications 26th October 2007
MLA London is seeking to recruit a freelancer to project manage and deliver eight Young Cultural Creators projects in the London region working with schools, libraries, museums, archives and authors.
1 Context
Young Cultural Creators (YCC) is a visual literacy project that has been running since 2001 providing opportunities for children and young people to explore creative writing and illustration through visits to museums, libraries, archives and galleries.
Through this project school groups are invited to participate in a series of structured visits to cultural institutions where they are introduced to collections of artefacts, art works and archival documents by best-selling children's authors, illustrators and other creative professionals. During the initial 'inspiration sessions' the young participants engage in discussions about literary themes and cultural heritage and are encouraged to research and draft their own pieces of written work, using items from the collection as stimuli for creative expression. The project also involves a visit to a local library to enable young people to undertake independent research and wider reading around the topics and themes. Follow-up activities in the classroom provide opportunities for further crafting of creative ideas before the project culminates in a celebratory presentation of the completed pieces of work.
YCC projects operate at four different tiers of involvement, with tier one offering full project management and all costs met down to tier four with no project management and only half of costs met with the aim of embedding the projects in institutions practice. For more information about the tiers please see appendix A.
For 2007-08 we have secured further funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families City Challenge and in addition to the 20 projects we are already running we are seeking a project manager to deliver an additional eight tier one projects.
