Dear All
At Dover Railway station the local council are wishing to improve the look of the station forecourt and introduce a shared space idea to enhance the asthetics of the area and work this into a scheme for the rest of the town as the station is currently isolated from the town centre.
I have concerns with this especially as they want to include shared space, removing the traditional demarcation between roads and paths. I have seen, and sent to the designers the GDFB report on shared surfaces, I have also listened to Peter Barker who gave a lecture about his concerns about shared surfaces especially the one going on in Ashford, Kent. I have asked that they consult with local users, especially disability groups and the local visually impaired charity , Kent assoc for the blind.
One of the concerns I raised was about people not knowing when they are walking on the path and when they are on the road due to a lack of kerb. They have come up with the attached design so I would like to have peoples views (good and bad) on this 50mm high kerb and also if they could point me in any other direction for information about shared surfaces in particular and any research based solutions for informing people where they may be ie on the road, the path or even a cycle path. ( I am aware of the DfT guidance on tactile surfaces) or if there is research out there that suggests that they just dont work. Although as these seem to be flavour of the month at the moment are there solutions out there which have been approved by visually impaired or blind, cane or guide dog users?
Any help appreciated.
Kind Regards
Justin Ryan
