This is a problem specific for older SPM versions. You shouldn't need spm_list_files for SPM5. MATLAB has moved on since SPM2 was released, and we don't have so many resources to keep on supporting old SPM versions. Any work on bug fixes and patches all goes into SPM5, rather than older versions. Maybe it's time to switch?

Subject: Re: [SPM] SPM2 and Matlab R2007a/R2007b (Windows XP 32-bit)
Hi Sheeba,
for what it's worth, I had the same problem and have pretty much given
up on it after a couple of days... so I would also be grateful for hints
regarding this issue.
Best,
Marko
