Hi Ros,
This is a bit of a grey area but from my point of view I have recommended reimbursement but not in
every case. If the student has been using a computer for their previous studies and it is still
capable of running the assistive technolgy recommended I would not recommend reimbursement.
However, if the computer has been purchased solely on the grounds that the student is starting
University and it was felt that a computer was necessary, then I would ask for reimbursement.
My reasoning for differentiating these cases is due to the fact that a student who has been using a
computer for some time already had access to the equipment necessary for their studies which must be
taken into account during assessment. However, in some cases students/ parents have acknowledged
the need for a computer to assist the student with their studies and have purchased the computer
solely on the basis that it is required for study. In this case I think reimbursement is justified
as the computer would not have been purchase if the student had not been admitted to higher
education.
I hope this helps,
Mark

Dear All,
I have a student who had a DSA assessment but had recently purchased a
laptop. The assessor would have recommended a laptop or computer so
recommended that the LEA reimburse the student for the computer. The
LEA have refused. I am a bit sketchy on the details as I haven't seen
the paperwork yet.
It is my understanding that it is fairly common practice now for
assessors to recommend reimbursement, especially when students have
recently purchased the equipment. Does anyone have any advice or
experience to offer on the arguments that can be put forward to the LEA?
Many thanks,
Ros Platton
