Archive Assistant Application in the Subject line. We aim to hold
interviews in the following week. We look forward to receiving your

Background

The National Theatre is central to the creative life of the country. In
its three theatres on the South Bank in London it presents an eclectic mix
of new plays and classics from the world repertoire, with seven or eight
productions in repertory at any one time. And through an extensive
programme of amplifying activities – Platform performances, backstage
tours, foyer music, publications, exhibitions and outdoor events – it
recognises that theatre doesn't begin and end with the rise and fall of
the curtain.

Purpose of Job
1.	The Archive Assistant post exists to support the work of the
Archivist in providing access to the Archive collection for both NT staff
and external researchers. This access can be provided via online
catalogues, virtual collections, or physical access to materials held in
the collection.

2.	The Archive Assistant will support the Records Management,
outreach and project work of the Archive.

Duties and Responsibilities
These will include, although not necessarily be limited to, the following:

1.	The principal duties of the post will be to work as part of a
small team in supporting public services, including assisting researchers
and running the archive's reprographic service. There will be a particular
emphasis on cataloguing our collection using the CALM software system.

2.	Provide innovative resources and advice that are specifically
tailored to meet the needs of your internal clients – including the main
customer facing departments.

3.	Support the various project work undertaken by the Archivist: Oral
History; Records Management; digitization; photographic projects.

4.	Co-ordinate the diary for access to the Archive research room and
Archive Seminar Room.

5.	Support the National’s communication objectives by sharing
information with your manager, team and colleagues as appropriate, whilst
respecting confidentiality, so that you and your colleagues have all the
information you need to perform your duties effectively.

6.	Comply with the National’s Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety
policies at all times.

7.	Undertake any other duties as may be delegated from time to time,
relevant to the post and appropriate to its grade.

Person Specification
The postholder must have the following:
1.	The candidate must be a graduate with a good first degree looking
to gain experience prior to applying to one of the archival Masters
degrees.

2.	An aptitude for communicating and influencing across all levels of
the Theatre, and amongst a diverse workforce

3.	The candidate should have good communication and keyboard skills
and knowledge of word-processing and databases.

Smoking Policy
Please note that the National Theatre is a no-smoking building.

In January 2008 the Archive is to open in new custom designed premises at
the NT Studio on The Cut, beside the Old Vic Theatre in Waterloo. The
Archive Assistant will play a key role in organising the transfer of
materials to the new facility and the set-up and opening of the new
research rooms and NT Digital Archive. A third full time member of the
Archive team will be joining late 2007 to concentrate on developing the
Archive’s educational services.
