We routinely cascade reproductive hormone profile requests (FSH, LH,
Prolactin Progesterone and Oestradiol) based on gender, age and the value
of the FSH, reflexing for the remaining hormones. Specific requests for
individual hormones are handled "off-line", outside the reflexing rules.
The rules applied originate from a mixture of sources and are
occassionally questioned, not least by ourselves in the laboratory. We
work within the limitations of our laboratory computer, and what is
possible with the Roche PSM interface. Savings on reagents are not
insignificant, but the rules need to be evidentially based laboratory
How do list members tackle the problem of inappropriate 'hormone profile'
requests? What evidence in literature supports their practice?
