PhD Scholarship, Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of
Groningen, The Netherlands
The Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen in
The Netherlands offers a PhD scholarship of 4 years for a
project on formal and informal power relations, governing
coalitions and implications for social and spatial justice
from an international comparative perspective. The
successful candidate would be able to commence in Groningen
from 01 January 2008 and would work with Dr. Justin
Beaumont (Research Nucleus), Prof. dr. Gert de Roo
(Planning and Environment) and Prof. dr. Piet Pellenbarg
(Economic Geography) with the Urban and Regional Studies
Institute (URSI) at the University.
The PhD forms an integral part of the Research Nucleus
theme of Urban Social Justice and questions observed
changes in relations between actors from public, private
and ‘third’ sectors at various scales, from a wider
perspective of power relations and fundamental democracy.
How can (sub-)national institutional arrangements,
governing coalititions and organizational aspects of social
life have a structural influence on decision-making,
participation and the relations between state, market and
civil society at various scales (nations, city-regions,
neighbourhoods). Governance arrangements will be related to
issues of social and spatial justice and equity and their
changes in time. The PhD focuses empirically on key urban
renewal projects in The Netherlands, the United States and
possibly a third country.
The research represents a unique opportunity to investigate
a challenging and innovative multidisciplinary research
area, while developing a career in a growing international
research environment. As part of the PhD there will be
opportunities for training in a range of research and
employment related skills, as well as attendance at
international and national conferences and seminars.
Arrangements for part-time teaching are also possible.
Groningen is a very interesting city of approximately

life, with regular public concerts and events in the
central public squares and more than 180 cafes and pubs
dotted throughout the centre. More than 45 percent of all
journeys in the city are made by bike, and the city is a
world leader in promoting sustainable transport.
