Is there not actually just as much of a problem with us each doing
things like this - if people actually submit jobs that expect to see
a 64bit environment that use C python extensions or the like then
substituting a local 32bit version will break them.
Should we not be applying the principle of least surprise and either
running a 32bit service if that is what is required, or announcing
64bit SL4 and letting users test their code on a predictable, uniform
system.
Incidentally, FWIW, I know the atlas software (one of those that
'drives'
the main code with python) runs quite happily on 64bit SL4, and does so
by installing a private 32bit python as part of the standard Athena
install,
it doesn't take advantage of any 64bit-ness.
