Hallow Sarah
In response to your request ,i am a midwife from
Tanzania,I am working with MUHIMBILI NATIONAL HOSPITAL
as a registered nurse/midwife,situated at Dar Es
Salaam a caital city of Tanzania.I am also a secretary
general of Tanzania Midwives Association.
Tanzania Midwives Association (TAMA) is a professional
non governmental organization that it was registered
in 1992. The aim of the organization is to organizing
registered midwives into one corporate body with a
focus of raising and maintaining the standard of
midwifery education and practice in Tanzania. Within
15 years of its existence, TAMA has grown gradually in
both its membership and activities. The association
started with 100 members, but as in December 2006
members were about 3,000. The growth in membership has
however, been quite slow. The association has
conducted various activities that include conducting
training, to midwives related to safe motherhood,
HIV/AIDS, prevention of HIV transmission from mother
to child (PMTCT) and infant feeding options. The
association has a wealth of midwives with research
skills and who have participated in various research
activities including a research on assessment of
Maternity Protection Legislation in Tanzania and Post
Abortion Care that was conducted in collaboration with
the Centre for Counseling Nutrition and Health Care
(CONSENUTH).
The association collaborates and networks with other
professional associations and organizations that have
interest in safe motherhood and women’s health
nationally and internationally. TAMA has conducted
several activities with the Africa Midwives Research
Network (AMRN), The Association of Gynecologist and
Obstetrician of Tanzania (AGOTA), The Private Nurses
and Midwives Association of Tanzania (PRINMAT),
CONSENUTH,, The White Ribbon Alliance Tanzania (WRAT),
The Women Dignity Project (WDP).
TAMA is a member of The International Confederation of
Midwives (ICM), through which TAMA has been able to
network with midwives internationally.
TAMA has been able to implement its activities through
support from within and outside the country. The main
supporters include USAID, UNICEF, The Ministry of
Health and Social Welfare, The Tanzania Commission for
AIDS (TACAIDS), and The Centre for Disease Control
(CDC) in Tanzania.
The support from these organizations has been on
short-term activities such as training, workshops,
seminars and conferences.
Currently, UNFPA is supporting a one year project on
increased availability of comprehensive, client
oriented and gender sensitive reproductive health
programme. This project is expected to come up with a
comprehensive reproductive health resource pack which
will be used by community’s own resource people (COP)
to influence health seeking behavior at community and
family levels. COP such as community based
contraceptive distributors (CBDs) and other community
workers will use the RH resource pack to sensitize the
community on promotion and preventive measures to
enhance good reproductive health. The pack will also
strengthen TAMA’s advocacy capacity in reproductive
health issues at community and policy levels.
That is about TAMA.
If you have any questions about Midwives or Midwifery
program do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely
Agnes
