Dear All
Joy Hendry has asked me to send out the poster for Ronald Dore's seminar.
She is very much looking forward to seeing you there, and would
be grateful if you could display the attached poster if you have a board.
Following his early and important field research in rural Japan, leading
to the book Shinohata: A Portrait of a Japanese Village, Professor Dore
established himself as the doyenne of industrial sociology with his
pathbreaking, British Factory- Japanese Factory: The Origins of National
Diversity in Industrial Relations, published originally in 1973. During
the hey-day of Japan bashing in the 1980s, through books such as Taking
Japan Seriously and Flexible Rigidities, Professor Dore was a rare voice
of reason, explaining how the Japanese system worked successfully, and
suggesting further that, in studying Japan the West might better find
something to learn rather than someone to blame.
Through continuous, substantive research over decades, driven by constant
attention to detail and common sense, Professor Dore has been a guiding
light to all social scientists working on Japan through his many books,
dozens of articles, through teaching, public appearances and as an advisor
far and wide. Among other positions, he has been a Professor at the
London School of Economics; Fellow of the Institute of Development,
University of Sussex; Visiting Professor, Harvard University; Adjunct
Professor of Political Science at MIT; and Director of the Japan-Europe
Industry Research Centre, Imperial College, University of London. He is
currently Associate, Centre for Economic Performance, London School of
Economics.
Best wishes
Chantal Butchinsky
