OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The work of the GRS Unit involves the development, testing and
implementation of growth standards. The Unit provides technical
support to Member States in implementing the newly developed WHO
Child Growth Standards including capacity building in child growth
assessment and interventions to promote child growth. The Unit also
assists countries in conducting, analysing and interpreting
nutritional surveys, and in implementing and evaluating growth
monitoring programmes and surveillance systems. At global level, the
Unit manages the WHO Global Database on Child Growth and Malnutrition
that provides surveillance data to monitor progress towards the MDGs.
Description of duties:
1. Assist in the construction of the WHO Child Growth Standards for
attained growth and growth velocity.
2. Evaluate the WHO growth standards by preparing and implementing
data analysis plans related to:
a) differences in attained size between the NCHS and the WHO
standards as represented by their respective smoothed centiles;
b) differences in variability between the NCHS and WHO standards;
c) impact of new WHO standards on under- and over-nutrition
prevalence estimates in populations and nutritional status
assessments in individual children;
d) identification of outcome-based cut-off points for under- and
over-nutrition.
3. Participate in the development and testing of the software ANTHRO
for PC and MD.
4. Analyze national nutritional surveys and provide technical support
to Member States in the implementation of the WHO Child Growth Standards.
5. Assist in the maintenance of the WHO Global Database on Child
Growth and Malnutrition.
6. Implement any other required data analyses related to work of the GRS Unit.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Master degree in Statistics or Biostatistics.
Desirable: Sound knowledge or training in epidemiological research.
Skills:
Sound knowledge of epidemiological research; high level of expertise
in the application of advanced analytical techniques to longitudinal
and cross-sectional data from epidemiological studies relating to
child growth; ability to critically appraise scientific literature,
to interpret and synthesize research evidence.
Other skills: Demonstrated strong skills in processing, analysis,
interpretation and presentation of quantitative data using advanced
statistical software (e.g. S-Plus, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Excel, PowerPoint).
Experience:
Essential: At least 5 years experience in the analysis of studies
relating to child growth, with published evidence of accomplishment
in this area.
Desirable: Experience in the analysis of complex, multicountry
datasets. Experience in the development and testing of software for
the analysis of child growth data.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English and demonstrated ability to write
technical reports in English. Additional UN languages would be an asset.
