I think the problem is likely to be data-types -- nreg is quite fussy
about having short (signed int16). $FSLDIR/etc/standard/avg152T1_brain
is a char (signed int8) image, so I guess that's the cause.
Try converting your images to short with something like:
avwmaths++ original new_short -odt short
