It's the name given, especially by the perpetrators, to the murder of girls
by family members for the "crime" of falling in love with young men of
different racial and/or religious backgrounds. Even marrying legally
according to the laws of their country of domicile does not necessarily
render them safe. I daresay this happens all over the world, but to our
shame there have been a spate of these killings in the UK lately. They're
beginning to attract a lot of very high profile notice, once they're
discovered. They are called honour killings, because the perpetrators say
the girls have dishonoured their family name, and this stain of dishonur can
only be washed clean with thier blood.
The law has to be invoked of course, which sets up resentments. Education is
the way forward, but it takes such a painfully long time.
