The Department of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba invites
applications for a probationary appointment at the rank of Instructor II.
This position will be available July 1, 2008 or as soon as possible
thereafter. Applicants will normally have a M.Sc. plus a minimum of five
years’ experience in a similar position, or a doctoral degree in chemistry.
The successful applicant will be responsible, in consultation with other
faculty and support staff, for the design and delivery of second year and
third year physical and theoretical chemistry laboratory programs, including
preparation of the laboratory manuals and supervision of Teaching
Assistants. Additional responsibilities include classroom lecturing at the
undergraduate level and consulting with students in the first year Chemistry
Resource Centre. The successful candidate must have the ability to manage
and supervise Teaching Assistants and manage the academic and technical
aspects of the laboratory operation. Knowledge of computational chemistry
software packages and their application to laboratory experiments is an asset.
The Department is one of seven departments in the Faculty of Science, and
currently has 20 tenured or tenure-track staff, 6 full-time academic staff
at the instructor level, 12 support staff, and over 50 graduate students,
post-doctoral fellows, and research associates. The Department teaches over
5000 students in laboratory programs with the majority of these being at the
first and second year levels.
The Department is undergoing a period of rejuvenation with the appointment
of 12 new faculty members and the acquisition of $15 million in funding for
new infrastructure over the past 6 years. Renovations to undergraduate
teaching laboratories, including a ~$1M equipment upgrade in the teaching
instrumental laboratory, will extend over several years. The physical
chemistry laboratory instructor will be responsible for designing
experiments which utilize new instrumentation in this laboratory. We are
well equipped for research and teaching support in most branches of
chemistry, including a full-time glassblower and service laboratories for
NMR (300 and 500 MHz instruments and 600 MHz with solid state capability),
combination FT-Raman/FT-IR spectrophotometer, mass spectrometry (EI, ESI,
MALDI and ICP-MS), and materials characterization (ESCA, Auger, powder XRD,
SIMS, SEM, SPM). There is excellent access to computer facilities within
the Department, the University, and WestGrid. We are in close proximity to a
number of national laboratories in Winnipeg including the National
Microbiology Laboratory located at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and
Animal Health, the International Centre for Infectious Diseases, the NRC
Institute for Biodiagnostics, and the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon.
Additional collaborative opportunities are available with other Departments
in the Faculty of Science and in the Faculties of Medicine, Agricultural and
Food Sciences, and Human Ecology.
