medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sue,
The practice is not uniquely English. Pierre-Andre Sigal, L'homme et le
miracle dans la France medievale (XIe-XIIe siecle) (Paris, 1985), devotes
a short paragraph (pp. 96-97) to candles based on measurement of a body, a
limb, an animal, or even a house or town. His earliest examples seem to
be from Gregory of Tours, In gloria martyrum, 15 (MGH SSRM 1:498) and De
virtutibus S. Martini, 1.18 (Ibid., p. 598).
Best,
John
