"What a gift, what an unexpected bonanza John Redwood's economic competitiveness review promises to offer Labour this week. His 10 chapters, written with the help of the shadow chancellor, George Osborne, form a mighty Redwood manifesto covering virtually everything: here are policies on health and safety (leave it up to employers' responsibility and common sense); pensions (deregulate their accounts); trains (privatise yet more); relaxing planning laws (let developers bribe local Nimby objectors instead of paying planning gain to councils); abandoning data protection; and saving a promised £14bn by slashing and burning regulation. "
Keeping the full document secret, Redwood was offering morsels in interviews to all and sundry. When I talked to him yesterday, he confirmed that, yes, the Tories would pull out of the EU social chapter, the directive that guarantees a four-week holiday. It gives part-time workers the same rights as the rest, helping women most. He would make it easier to fire people.

I was under the impression that as it's an EU directive they would have a hard time to ditch them. Istr that if England & Wales falls below the "standard" of the directive they can be taken to the EU court and then we all lose with higher taxes to pay any fine.
Or am I just talking rubbish again (never a lawyer around when you want one).

This is because the full report isn't due until Friday I believe, and some of the reports have apparently been inaccurate., but then what is new? And of course it hasn't been accepted by the Conservative Party yet., all the reviews Cameron has set up are to be considered and then selected for their manifesto. Is this last bit too political.
Like Zena off to flower arrange now as dusting all done!!

Does anyone know precisely what Redwood's group recommended?? The news item was extremely vague "ditch SOME data protection laws...."

A report saying that the official opposition party proposes to scrap data protection legislation is surely a legitimate item for discussion on a general list for librarians. My guess is that Keith's point is that lis-professional is a place for discussion of the issues as they relate to our professional practice and that there are other places where this thread might be pursued - particularly the bit about fellow males in the pink, or whatever it was.

Thank you Julian- that was the point I was making - unless Keith believes such comment is only acceptable if it's the politically correct shade of pink....and made by a fellow male....
And now I'll go below stairs, and get on with my dusting.

Though of course it could be argued the original posting was pretty political. I'll duck back below the parapet now.

Zena
I'll refrain from an all-too-tempting disparaging rejoinder and just say, please, that this really isn't the forum for making party political comments. Thanks.

Frankly, I'd rather have the Tories trying to get business moving, than Labour with a costly - and probably non-functioning - ID card system....

"A Conservative government would tear up Britain's commitments on data protection and other regulations in a bid to create a more competitive economy."
"A wide-ranging policy review set to be published this Friday will make the recommendations, which were backed today by shadow chancellor George Osborne in an interview <http://www.ft.com/cms/s/e7237330-4911-11dc-b326-0000779fd2ac.html> with the Financial Times."
