Many thanks for all your help and suggestions. I'll try to follow up Phil's idea on constituency boundaries (which fits the letters well - but not realy the location). Manorial boundaries are also certainly possible - perhaps the marker is there to indicate the boundary when the garden (and wall) was laid out across it.
