THINKING THROUGH BODIES: POST-GRADUATE MASTERCLASS
DR ETHAN BLUE
Friday, 12 October 2007
10am - 4pm
Venue: Old Senate Room (adjacent to the Institute of Advanced Studies)
This master class encourages participants to investigate the symbolic and
material aspects of embodiment in historical, geographic, and conceptual
contexts. Issues of bodily integrity, dis/ability, racial and gender
difference, and their articulations to experiences of class, nation,
sexuality, in contexts may be taken into consideration. We invite
participants who examine bodily issues: from adornment and manipulation to
destruction and reclamation; from cybernetics to non-anthropocentric
studies; from aging, torture, illness and health, to pornography and
variants of pleasure and pain. We will present papers for discussion in a
rigorous yet collegial environment.
Biographical Information: Ethan Blue is a lecturer in history. His research
focuses on prison systems in the United States, and his recent work analyzes
medicine in penal contexts. He has published research in Humanities
Research, Radical History Review, Bad Subjects, and the edited volume
Isolation: Places and Practices of Exclusion.
All interested postgraduate students from Perth universities are invited to
attend, as well as academic staff. We are aiming for no more than eight
papers to be given during the day. Registration and a 250 word abstract need
to be sent in via the online registration form no later than 21 September.
Those selected for presentation will be notified by 5 October. Limited
places are also available for those who wish to attend, but do not wish to
give a paper or presentation. Early registration is advised. Registration
is via the IAS website:
