ESRC '1+3' or '+3' PhD Studentship:
'Social Interaction in Training for Healthcare'

King's College London (Department of Management)

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship to be
supervised in the Work, Interaction and Technology research centre
(WIT - http://www.kcl.ac.uk/wit). The studentship is available as
part of a large ESRC/EPSRC Teaching Enhanced Learning project called
'Phantom' (Personalised learning with haptics when Teaching with
Online Media). The project is developing and evaluating tools for
training simulations in healthcare and forms a collaboration between
the Dental Institute and WIT (both King's College London), the
University of Reading and the University of Central England. For
further information about the project see
http://www.tlrp.org/proj/tel/tel_cox.html.

As part of its broader research programme the project is funding a
number of full time PhD studentships to commence in October 2007.
This studentship, which is to be based in WIT, will support a social
scientist to engage in ethnographic, video-based research on
communication and training in relevant healthcare settings and
specifically activities that depend upon manual skills (physical
examination, surgical techniques, dental work, etc.). The student
will be encouraged and expected to further define the research focus
in collaboration with the supervisors.

The successful applicant will enjoy the normal benefits of
supervision, training and support as a doctoral student in the
Department of Management, but will also be a member of the 'Phantom'
research team and will contribute to the development of its research
programme.

The award is open to those who satisfy the criteria of eligibility
for ESRC '1+3' or '+ 3' studentships: e.g. UK residents, or EU
residents who have lived in the UK for over three years; a social
science degree such as sociology, Grade 2.1 or above or equivalent
post-graduate experience. The studentship will cover fees and will
also provide a maintenance grant. ESRC maintenance grants in London
are currently worth GBP 14,300 per annum and are exempt from income
tax or NI (2006-07).

For informal discussions about the project and the studentship,
please contact Dr. Jon Hindmarsh <[log in to unmask]>.

Details of how to apply are available from
<[log in to unmask]>. Please use 'WIT-Phantom' as the subject
header.

Completed applications should be submitted by email to
<[log in to unmask]> by *August 20th, 2007*. Short listed
applicants will be invited for interview.
