50th anniversary of the Life Peerages Act
Opportunity for paid historical research/writing
The Parliamentary Archives requires a temporary researcher to research and
draft material for use by Parliamentary staff in connection with the 50th
anniversary of the Life Peerages Act which falls in 2008 and in particular
the introduction of the first women peers.
The research is likely to include:
1) a numerical trend analysis of women life peers as percentages of the
whole House of Lords and of life peers; average ages, party affiliations,
etc;
2) analysis of what issues the first women life peers focused on, how far
these were ‘women's issues,’ and how these changed over time;
3) consideration of the contribution made by women life peers to the work
of the House of Lords and of Parliament;
4) consideration of what linkages there are, if any, between the work of
women peers and the feminist agenda.
The researcher will be required to gather information from a range of
sources including printed sources such as Hansard and Parliamentary Papers
and will be able to draw on material held by the Parliamentary Archives,
the House of Lords Library and the House of Lords Information Office as
necessary.
The successful applicant should:
- Have a first degree in history or a related discipline and experience of
postgraduate research in the area of 20th century parliamentary and/or
women’s history
- Be able to collate the results of the research for use by Parliamentary
staff in an accessible format
- Be competent in using Microsoft Office applications, including Word and
Excel, and e-mail.
An hourly fee will be agreed for this work according to experience and
