CAST is a set of free electronic textbooks for teaching Statistics.
It can be accessed from a
web browser at
http://cast.massey.ac.nz
CAST can be downloaded and run from a local computer or server to
make it more responsive.
(Follow the New User link in the login page.) An email address must
be registered (free) to
start CAST.
CAST contains 3 introductory statistics e-books (General, Biometric
and Business), each of
which has over 400 pages and over 450 interactive diagrams (applets)
to help teach
statistical methods and concepts.
CAST also contains two advanced e-books. One teaches Multiple
Regression (212 pages
and 263 applets) and the other covers some topics in Experimental
Design (99 pages and
83 applets). The experimental design e-book is currently incomplete
and its topics are more
aimed at industrial experiments than biological ones (e.g. screening
experiments, response
surfaces and designs for mixtures).
CAST takes an applied approach to all topics and makes extensive use
of dynamic and
interactive diagrams to teach the underlying statistical concepts.
Changes since release 3.2: Incremental improvements to the
introductory e-books; major
rewrite of the Multiple Regression e-book with the theory de-
emphasised and material
about general linear models and indicator variables added; new
Experimental Design
e-book.
