Biostatisticians
NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre
School of Public Health
Reference No. 108611
The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre aims to improve health outcomes, clinical
practice and public health policy in Australia through the better use of
clinical trials research. We are seeking suitably experienced and/or
qualified people to join the Clinical Trials Centre as biostatisticians.
There are currently 12 biostatisticians working at the Centre.
Biostatistics at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre (CTC)
Biostatistics at the CTC encompasses a wide variety of skills. A
biostatistician at the CTC will advise on study design and the conduct and
interpretation of statistical analyses. A statistician will work as part
of a multidisciplinary team including data managers, clinical
investigators and other scientists in areas that include oncology,
cardiovascular research and neonatology. The challenges include
communication of methods and results (verbally and written) within this
team. The environment at the CTC helps develop problem solving and
strategic thinking skills especially in the areas of interim analyses,
statistical monitoring, clinical study designs and sample size
determinations.
Statisticians play a critical role in the development of the scientific
principles underpinning clinical studies. This involves liaising with
clinicians, epidemiologists and statistical colleagues to develop
efficient study designs and to help resolve difficult statistical issues.
Statisticians are an integral part of study conduct, with involvement in
designing and performing randomisation strategies, data management
(recruitment strategies) and statistical analyses. Interpretation of
study results by investigators are made in close consultation with study
statisticians. Opportunities for development of novel clinical trials
methodologies are encouraged, as well as participating in the delivery of
educational courses and graduate teaching.
The CTC is seeking to appoint a statistician with an interest in
biostatistics and clinical trials methods. Statisticians with a
mathematical statistics background are encouraged to apply and
biostatistical experience, whilst desirable, is not essential.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience or
potential in using standard statistical packages, have skills in study
design and conduct and experience in statistical data analysis. A degree
in statistics is essential. Additionally, the ability to work through
problems systematically and cooperatively with colleagues and implement
agreed solutions is essential.
The position is full-time fixed term for 12 months, subject to the
completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. There is
