Cambridge have added or will be adding JSR170 to DSpace which will then mean
it will integrate with Sakai.
If you want more details then email me off-line.

| Thank you for this - we've already got Dspace working.

|
| From a position of not really knowing too much about this area (!), may
| I
| suggest looking at Sakai.
|
| Sakai is open source and can render true portlets (JSR168 compliant
| services). It employs the Pluto 1.1.1 portal to do this.
|
| Oxford, Cambridge and UHI are currently working at integrating the open
| source repositories DSPACE and Fedora into Sakai which should give you a
| fully open source VLE/portal/repository triumvariate!
|
| I guess it all boils down to what your requirements are and what
| timescales
| you are looking at.
|
| Sakai suffered from giving itself too much hype in the early days, it's
| only
| recently that the software has become fully usable. The latest release
| is
| v2.4 and looks very neat. The community is growing nicely with many more
| European institutions jumping on board. We're hoping that a couple or
| three
| UK institutions will be announcing that they will be deploying Sakai in
| the
| near future.

| | Hi Peter,
| |
| | We've gone with Moodle for our VLE as it was open source and could be
| | manipulated to meet our needs. We did have web pages with various
| links
| | running alongside the VLE but with the upgrade for the next academic
| | year we have transferred it all into Moodle. So far the response from
| | staff has been positive.
| |
| | Regards,
| |

| | Has anyone on the list got experience of the above and if you were
| | starting with a "blank canvas" what would you use to set up a college
| | portal to the world but mainly for students?
| |
| | All help gratefully received.
| |
