I've just produced a simple cabinet (70cm cube) containing two 20W UV
fluorescent tubes, with a black fabric 'hood, like an old-fashioned camera,
to cover the heads of up to two people viewing the contents. Viewers would
sit on a stool, put their heads under the 'hood' and look inside the
cabinet. Various familiar objects incorporating fluorescent materials were
displayed alongside and could be put inside for viewing. The internal base
of the cabinet has a black laminate finish for maximum contrast. It was part
of a display featuring research at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at
this year's Royal Society Summer Science exhibition. Nice and simple, but I
suggested the idea to them because I knew it would be popular and engage
people's attention.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] fluorescence
Has anyone got experience in demonstrating fluorescence as part of a public
display? I'm wanting to display trichomes (leaf glands) that fluoresce under
violet light (420nm) and emit blue/green light (about 480nm) and looking for
suitable (cheap and sturdy) light sources or filters,
