Postgraduate Symposium: 'Harmony and Dissonance'

Call For Papers
The Society of Dix-Neuviémistes invites postgraduate students working
in any area
of nineteenth-century French studies to submit proposals for 15
minute papers
addressing the theme of 'harmony and dissonance'. A 'postgraduate' is
considered to
be a student registered for a higher degree (e.g. Masters' or PhD),
and who has not
yet been awarded a PhD qualification.
Possible topics for discussion may include (but are not limited to):
- Peace and war
- The poetics of dissonance
- The end of musical harmony?
- Acclaim and scandal
- Conflicting ideologies and political discord
- Criminality and the law
- Sickness and health
- Paris and the provinces
- The class divide
- Romanticism and the Grotesque
- Impressionism and the Salon
- Literary schools in conflict
- Forms of progress and rupture
Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words (in English or
French) by Monday,
