medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear John
Thank you very much for this. I will send it on to my sister, who will be
relieved to have a safety-net for her daughter. I hope that, where three
years at Durham failed, a few months in Umbria will open her eyes to
medieval history (having achieved a 2.1 in combined arts, which included a
third history, she asked me if Charles (Stuart) II was my period!
I am sorry you feel that 'three years in Durham failed' for your niece,
presumably academically.
Four years at Durham (Maths, not Arts) were the best four years of my son's
life so far. Academically it was good, but the whole Durham ethos, which
seems to accommodate square pegs in round holes suited him no end. He got
his College Colours (for theatre work) and became much more rounded as a
person. The current tendency to think of university as a purely academic
exercise is, I think, rather sad.
Anne
