SEPTEMBER COURSES:
Please note: all our courses take place at Aslib in London.
Metadata: Principles and Practice, 18 September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/4/21.html)
Metadata is one of the most important, but least understood, aspects of the
modern information environment. This course demystifies the concept of
metadata, and shows how and why it is used, in a variety of environments. A
variety of commonly-used metadata formats will be demonstrated for example
Dublin Core, and AACR/MARC - and the way in which metadata creation relates
to the 'traditional' library/information tasks of indexing and cataloguing
will be outlined. Library/information workers are often called to create
metadata records; they may also be asked to evaluate, choose or create
metadata formats for their organisation's information. This course deals
with both these topics, in principle and in practice.

Knowledge Architecture: AN Exploratory Workshop, 19 September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/3/03.html)
IA however, is evolving in some quarters into Knowledge Architecture (KA), a
compound discipline addressing all the sources of organizational competence
- explicit and tacit - within a single, holistic framework. In order to add
the missing tacit dimension, an additional set of tools and techniques needs
to be included in the Knowledge Architect's toolkit.
This interactive workshop blends presentation, discussion and practical
exercises to consider the evolutionary stages involved in the transition
from IA to KA and to examine the most important tools and techniques
involved. It presents a number of case studies and invites delegates to
discuss the implications for information professionals, information
managers, information architects, knowledge managers and knowledge workers
alike.

Running an Effective Information Service with Limited Resources, 20
September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/4/12.html)
So you've been given an information service to manage. You have a room -
perhaps containing shelves of publications inherited from your predecessor.
You have a desk, with a networked computer and a phone, which is ringing.
Where do you start?
Step-by-step, this one-day course will take you through the basics of
setting up and running an effective information service for your
organisation. Participative and practical throughout, it includes exercises
and feedback, with plenty of opportunity for discussion and ideas sharing.
Course Director: Tim Buckley Owen
Course fee: £230 plus VAT (£270.25) Aslib corporate members / £287.50 plus

Cataloguing Practice, 26 September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/4/03.html)
If you have experience of cataloguing or database compilation but need
guidance or practice using AACR2 and MARC (including MARC21), or want to
refresh knowledge gained some time ago, this course will give you the skills
needed, including some practice in using online public access catalogues
(OPACs) and thinking about their design criteria. Participants are invited
to bring typical material from their collections to form a group of items
that can be considered in the practical sessions. This course is not aimed
at complete beginners.

Economics for the Real World: Understanding Economic Data, 27 September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/1/05.html)
This course addresses the key economic principles that underpin business and
government, bypassing the highly abstract and unrealistic components of much
conventional economics training. It clarifies the issues and interprets the
jargon in order to make economic theory relevant to business activity. The
course aims to equip attendees with a practical understanding of the ways in
which economists try to describe and explain the workings of the economy,
the significance of the many types of economic data and how changes in them
should be interpreted.

Effective Desk Research, 28 September 2007
(http://www.aslib.com/training/6/02.html)
This course is aimed at 1) professionals who are at the point in their
career where they are adding longer term project work to their basic
information retrieval duties and 2) managers/mentors helping such people. It
details a step-by-step structure that can help manage the research process
with a particular emphasis on reference interview techniques, data
collection, methods of adding value and managing an effective feedback
process. The focus is on practicality and the course is based on systems the
lecturer has helped set up and run himself. According to the particular
needs of the group on the day, a number of pre-prepared units can be slotted
in including, for instance, using the telephone as a research tool and
managing a fee-charging service. The emphasis of the day is very much to
encourage debate and best practice sharing amongst delegates who have the
opportunity to discuss the challenges they face with fellow professionals.
