I'm still not convinced for the need of Virtual worlds.
The number of users seems small, compared to the internet as a whole, or a variety of mediums. Most internet users do not have the IT access to use it anyway and it costs money. CILIP's involvement seems like a gimmick to me until someone can explain why its better than video conferencing or instant messaging for communications/meetings or a website or radio advert for promotion. Considering CILIP's finances I am not sure how this is a good use of money, except to tell its members how cool and cutting edge they are.

I think the computing / network requirements for SL place it out of
reach for the NHS at present (leaving aside the acceptability to NHS ICT
departments).
One would expect that the fullness of time (N6 perhaps?) might give us
the necessary bandwidth and the falling price of hardware may eventually
give us the desktop capability but we are not there yet.
The concept of virtual reference might be something to explore in the
nearer future (he says imaging the conversation with the local network
people about why I want chat and IM unblocked).
Cheers
