GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) OFFICER

AfC Pay Band 5 £19,166 to £24,803 Fixed Term for 2 years
The West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit collects detailed data on the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the West Midlands. The Research and
Information team uses the data to provide information and statistics to NHS
organisations across the region and to contribute to local, regional and
national studies, trials and research. In addition the WMCIU hosts a small
GIS team to support this research and information function and provide GIS
expertise to public health colleagues in the region.
A new post has been identified to enhance the level of geographic
information support offered to the WMCIU and its busy research and
information team. The main activities of the new postholder will be to
maintain key geographical resources and respond rapidly to requests for
geographic analyses to support cancer surveillance, NHS service planning
and other research interests. The GIS team also provides support to
internet mapping services hosted by the West Midlands Public Health
Observatory and the Cancer Information Service hosted by UK Association of
Cancer Registries.
You will be qualified to at least degree standard in a subject with a
geographical, health or analytical component, or have equivalent relevant
experience. You will have practical skills in the use of geographic
information systems (ArcGIS and MapInfo) and in the use of other desktop
applications (e.g. Excel, Access, Word and Powerpoint) or similar. You
will have a keen eye for detail, good graphic and communication skills and
the ability to work independently within a number of project areas.
