Apologies for cross-posting

Please see below short details of 7 new research positions (of which 3 are
specifically related to climate change) for social scientists at the
Macaulay Institute, Aberdeen. Apologies for cross-posting:

ECOLOGICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIST
You will strengthen the capacity of the research group to address
environmental economic problems.

You will have a PhD in an appropriate economic discipline and will be
expected to be familiar with non-market valuation techniques and cost
benefit analysis with respect to the environment. Ref MA30/07
http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA30/07

RURAL ECONOMIST
You will work in the area of Rural/Regional Economics, to work specifically
on quantitative analysis of rural economies.

You will have a PhD in economics/agricultural/resource economics. Possible
areas of expertise would include input-output analysis, CGE modelling,
regional/small area economic analysis or land use or food related economics.
You will be expected to work with large datasets and familiarity with
standard statistical software such as SAS, STATA or SPSS is essential. Ref
MA28/07
http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA28/07

SOCIAL SCIENTIST
You will strengthen the capacity of the Research Group to address rural
socio-economic problems. This post-holder will be expected to make a major
contribution to research on sustainability which comprises one of three
cross-cutting themes in the Institute's Scottish Executive-funded research
programme.

You will have a PhD in a social sciences discipline and be located in one of
the three subgroups within SERG: rural and regional economics; ecological
and environmental economics; and society institutions and governance. Ref
MA29/07
http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA29/07

QUALITATIVE RESEARCHER
You will be an experienced Qualitative Researcher who will provide
leadership to a growing research team that looks at society, institutions
and governance. You will also manage projects on rural development and
resource management.

3 POSTS ON Climate Change:

SPATIAL MODELLER, ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIST, ENVIRONMENTAL
PSYCHOLOGIST/SOCIOLOGIST
We seek to fill three posts in a team working on understanding and modelling
mitigation and adaptation responses to climate change by the rural sector.
The overall aim will be to improve understanding of the relative impacts of
different actors in the rural community (households, land based businesses
and other rural firms and organisations) and the scope of different green
house gas (GHG) mitigation and adaptation policies. Experience of
inter-disciplinary working, collaborative partnerships, an ability to
communicate findings in a range of media, and a track record in attracting
external funding are all desirable. One of the posts will also oversee the
Cross-Cutting Theme Responding to Climate Change within the SEERAD Programme
3: Environment - Land Use and Rural Stewardship.

SPATIAL MODELLER
To integrate social, economic and biophysical information on household
behaviour, land use and transport to help analyse trajectories of rural
communities towards low carbon economies. Applicants should have knowledge
of Geographical Information Systems and experience in integrated analysis of
biophysical and socio-economic data. An interest in climate change issues
would be highly desirable. Experience in emerging simulation modelling
approaches (e.g. agent-based, Bayesian) and implementing biophysical models
in a spatially explicit framework would also be advantageous.
Ref MA11/07
      http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA11/07

ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIST
To explore widely used carbon accounting procedures and their accuracy and
limitations, the economics of carbon reduction strategies and the economics
of movement towards lower carbon economies. Applicants should have an
awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of alternative policy instruments
to address GHG reduction. An ability to critically interrogate data sources
on GHG use and impacts, appraise GHG reduction strategies and apply economic
evaluation techniques at regional levels is important.
Ref MA12/07
http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA12/07

ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGIST/SOCIOLOGIST
To examine the links between attitudes, values, behaviour and other factors
that might influence actors' responses to climate change, and factors that
could influence the uptake of GHG-reducing actions. Applicants should have
experience of how people perceive their interactions with the environment
and response to climate change issues. In addressing these questions, the
post-holder is invited to consider both well established and recently
emerging psychological and/or sociological research methods. Ref MA13/07
                        http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/jobs/jobdetails.php?MA13/07
One post will be at Band 4 and two at Band 6. The banding levels broadly
equate to Post Doctoral Research Fellow (Band 6) or Senior Research Fellow
(Band 4).

Starting salary at Band 4 £36,500 - £41,800 or Band 6 £24,200 - £27,200 per
annum with excellent employee benefits.
