Dear colleagues,
We have a PhD studentship in Community Health on offer
at Glasgow Caledonian University (details below). We
would welcome applications from critical / community
psychologists.
Please forward it to anyone who might be interested.
Thanks,
Flora Cornish.
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on the
topic of ‘social prescribing’ in the School of
Nursing, Midwifery & Community Health at Glasgow
Caledonian University.
Social prescribing (or social referral) is a way for
health service providers to link potential users with
non-medical sources of support in their communities,
such as groups providing opportunities for self-help
and befriending, arts and creativity, and other
community-based activities. This emerging practice
calls for new partnerships between health service
providers, the community/ voluntary sector, and
service users. Disrupting well-established boundaries
and establishing new partnerships will necessitate
active sense-making among all three groups, as new
definitions of patient need and appropriate
‘treatments’ are created, and new identities and roles
for service users and voluntary sector workers are
established. Using qualitative methods, this study
will investigate the perspectives of these three sets
of partners on the meaning, purpose and acceptability
of social prescribing aimed at promoting and
maintaining psychosocial health.
The student will join an active team of researchers in
the field of Community and Public Health. The project
will be supported by an Advisory Group with local
expertise and networks in community health and social
prescribing. Extensive opportunities for support and
development for postgraduate students are provided by
the Caledonian Graduate Centre and the HealthQWest
Graduate School.
Applicants should have a first class or good upper
second degree in Nursing/ Midwifery/ Public health/
Psychology/ Sociology or other relevant health-related
or social science discipline. A relevant Masters
degree would be an advantage, as would experience in
community development work and partnership working
with communities.
The studentship covers university fees at the UK/EU
level and a stipend (£13,000 per annum), for full-time
study for 3 years.
