Dear all

I am writing further to the recent queries on the admin-planning JISC list.
Please note that a copy of this email will also reach your HESA DDS
contacts via an email that Jonathan Waller will be sending today.

JACS CODES - SUBJECT GROUPS IN THE TIMES
The mapping of HESA data to subjects draws on the JACS structure. The
matrix that shows the assignment of JACS codes to Times' subject groups can
be found in Appendix 1 to the original definition documentation circulated
by HESA - HESA Data Enquiry ref 26025. This documentation is still
available from the HESA website, and is accessible by your own
institutional HESA data contacts; we can also provide a copy on request.
The data itself must be accessed via your data contacts.

SUBJECT COVERAGE IN TIMES AND CHANGES IN HEIs
I have been asked by the Times to circulate the following information
regarding the publication of subject tables in this year's Good University
Guide:

"32 subjects will be covered in this year's Guide. The subjects included
in this year's Guide are shown at the end of this email. In making this
selection we have tried to include the major subject groups, but it is
acknowledged that any selection of this type may be imperfect. This
should be for one year only, as it is anticipated that the full subject
range will be covered in future Guides."

Further to the email circulated by me last week to admin-planning and a
copy of which went via HESA to "DDS contacts", can you please ensure
that you inform us at
[log in to unmask] of any undergraduate
subjects (and this relates only to those 32 subjects that are to be
published in the Guide) that were reported in 2004/05 HESA data that are no
longer offered to new applicants.

METHODOLOGY
Regarding the method, I can confirm that the main source of data (which
HESA data contacts have previously viewed) will be HESA
student/finance/staff data, using 2004/05 data primarily. I can confirm
2005/06 HESA data will not be used in this Guide. NSS and RAE data will
also be used. When the tables are published in August, there will be a
guide summarising the methodology for a newspaper audience, with a fuller
guide to the methodology and data sources also available.
