Subject: Fwd: British Woodland Burial - research studentship

British Woodland Burial Theological, ecological and social values

Collaborative Doctoral Research Studentship

Durham University and The Arbory Trust

This opportunity for a fully funded postgraduate research studentship has

been made possible under the AHRC-ESRC Religion and Society Programme for

collaborative research between universities and non-academic bodies. This

project, between Durham University and The Arbory Trust, provides opportunity

for a three year period of research on British woodland burial paying

particular attention to theological, ecological and social values.

The successful candidate, based at Durham University, will begin work in

October 2007 and complete a thesis by September 2010, supervised by Prof.

Douglas J Davies of The Department of  Theology and Religion, Centre for

Death and Life Studies, and  Dr Matthew Lavis of The Arbory Trust.

The award is based on the same terms of eligibility and regulations as a

standard AHRC doctoral award.

Normally, the successful candidate will possess a good initial degree and a

Masters level qualification in subject areas appropriate for engaging in

research involving social scientific, theological and religious studies

methods. The project will involve a good deal of sensitive interview and

survey work, travel, liaison with various organizations as well as the

analysis of historical and contemporary forms of belief and religious and

non-religious custom and ritual practice.

Applications including full curriculum vitae and contact information (there

is no application form as such) should be sent in hard copy or by email to

the following person, from whom further formal details can be obtained.

Mrs Ellen Middleton, The Postgraduate Secretary, Dept. of Theology and

Religion, Durham University, Abbey House, Palace Green, Durham, DH1 3RS.
