Hi Isabelle,
My BSc dissertation way back in 2001 was about Best Practice in the use of the Internet by museums, and invloved a survey of the current situation based on a survey undertaken by Dr Jonathon Bowen back in 1996or7, so I could send you a copy of that data if that is any help. It covers things that were of importance back then - how much was spent on websites, how many people were employed to work on websites, how many webpages museums had, and the use of these pages.
Back then I found that most museums spent less than £500 a year on websites! And that most had less than 10 pages! I would be happy to share either the data (or the whole dissertation) with you. I believe Dr Bowen is still active in this field (he comes from computer programming back ground I believe) and if you can contact him, he may have some interesting info for you (try a google on him, he used to have his own website, and also ran the Virtual Library and Museum Pages back then.)
Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything using my details below.

Subject: Webmasters? info specialists? museum web folks??
I am a postgraduate student at the University of Leicester in the Art Museum and Gallery Studies department. I am writing my dissertation on the changing role of the museum 'webmaster' from 1997 - 2004. I know the term Webmaster is a bit antiquated but that is part of the investigation...
I would like to interview you because of your current position at the Science Museum involves working with the web. I would like to hear your perspective on the changes museums faced (or still face) as they tried (or
try) to get online. Specifically, I am interested in the status, role and skills of the Webmaster within the museum and how they have evolved from 1997.
If you are interested in participating please email me at [log in to unmask] and I can send you a list of questions to answer.
Alternatively, if you know of someone who I should be in contact with please forward this message on..
I appreciate your time and help!
