John Kinsella did talk in detail about his shoes during both the seminar
and the reading, but at this remove I can't quite remember the materials of
which they were composed. One likely substance comes to mind, hemp, and
indeed that's the only ingredient foregrounded by online vendors, though
one designer inspired by African shoes made from recycled car tires
eventually discovered a breathable plastic formerly used for yachting
upholstery.
JK's motives for not going out to the legendary off-campus establishment
remain unclear to me (there were receptions after both the seminar and
reading at which non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks were available and
Kinsella attended those). I'd guess that he'd had enough of hanging out
and decided to return to his hotel room to work all night or to sleep.
