I would just like to point out that the single cylinder vertical engine in the National Railway Museum, mentioned by Paul Stephens, was not actually used for colliery winding but hauled wagons on the Weatherhill Incline of the Stanhope and Tyne Railroad from 1834. In many respects, however, it is very similar to the winding engine preserved at Beamish.
Another single cylinder vertical engine existed at the Isabella shaft of Elemore Colliery, Co. Durham, from about 1830 until 1978 when it was dismantled and some of the parts preserved. Anyone know what happened to them?
Regards, Simon.
