I suspect that regular lubrication of the cutters is sometimes
overlooked; it's especially important with cross-cut shredders. I have
a 'broken' Fellowes cross-cut that failed before I was aware of the
need for oiling. It's repairable i.e. one of the larger nylon gears
has 'lost' two of its spokes, just haven't got around to locating the
spare part. It had been used to shred a large volume of old and hence
very dry paper. I bought a temporary cheap replacement from Stationary
Box! The cutters are lubricated regularly and so far no problems. I
use a lubricant designed for use with shredders; the usual advice is
to use a non-inflammable lubricant.
