In general, you will get a more reliable and consistent speed from cable than
ADSL. BUT Virgin (formerly NTL/Telewest) have just announced they will be
charging me 25p per minute to ring their helpline (using a (Virgin landline
telephone) to report faults with their service. I am sorely tempted to leave.
Virgin management even did not tell their support staff about this beforehand.
On the subject of a router, our Netgear router is a bit flaky sometimes, and
this may relate to overheating. If you can stand the router upright rather than
lying it flat, and avoid papers/etc being put on to of it, it may help. I am
currently looking at getting a draft N Router with gigabit Ethernet ports to
replace it, but these are a bit pricy at present (we have just got a PS3, which
also uses wifi, as well as the Nintendo Wii, my wife's Yamaha keyboard, and 3
other PCs in the house also using Wifi, plus sometimes my mobile phone (P990i)
or my Pocket PC) so the wifi network is getting a little congested...)
