Dear National Autistic Society, DANDA, Mental Health Foundation, Bob Niven
(DRC CEO) and Janet Taylor and Jo Todd (DRC's NeuroDiversity and ASC's
Action Group) and Helen Steele (DoH Prime Ministers Improving Life Chances
Report) and Rt. Hon. Anne McGuirea MP, Minisiter For Disabled People et
al...
I don't know if you are aware of this disturbing news-story, see below,
which I am sure that you will want to make comment on and challenge to the
appropriate individuals and bodies.
Man's with Asperger Syndrome IQ 'too high' for treatment:- A man who
suffers from a form of autism has had his treatment withdrawn because his IQ
is too high.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/6731267.stm
I am a co-founder and member of the Hull and E. Riding Mental Health Action
Group (MHAG) and DANDA and I experience living with Aspergers Syndrome (late
diagnosis at 38 years old) with other co-mordid NeuroDiverse impairments:
Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, TS, ADHD, CAPD and I have experienced great trauma,
bullying throughout my life and mental health diificulties.
Most of the Adults and members with MHAG and DANDA have NeuroDiverse
impairments who are on the spectrum living experience mental ill
health/distress and are 'survivors' of the oppressive systems which have
continualy misdiagnosed/mistreated, or if have managed to fight and struggle
for many years to get an appropraite diagnose(s) then have to fight and
struggle for any basic and/or specialist health, social care and inclusive
and independent living.
There are many Adults, like myself are left without any appropraite
treatments and theraputic interventions at all. This then means, like the
Peter Temple case in York many NeuroDiverse individuals then become
'embattled' with health and social services and this causes great trauma and
'social-exclusion'.
This is an basic human rights and civil liberities abuse and many
individuals then are unfortunately 'mis-labelled/disgnosed' and and may then
become 'criminalised' and end up within 'Disablist' criminal justice system
and/or other institutions (including acute mental health units) which does
not meet their needs.
Mr Temple's case is unfortunately not an isolated case here in the UK and
there are many NeuroDiverse (Asperger Syndrome) adults experiencing the same
daily embattled and social-exclusion experiences, including myself.
I have been pro-actively campaigning now for 15 years and for doing so
suffered horrendous basic human rights and civil liberties abuses and
'Disablist' attitudes, ignorance and behaviour by numerous national and
local national public bodies and they have tried to 'Criminalise' my
NeuroDiverse behaviour and impairments as a Professional NeuroDiverse and
disabled peoples' 'user-led' campaigner, (peer) advocate, educator,
consultant and researcher within the NeuroDiverse, Disabled Peoples', Mental
Health 'Survivors' and Inclusive and Independent living movements at local,
national and international levels (UN Disability Convention).
I have been involved as a user-led consultant with the Prime Ministers
Improving Life Chances and DRC's NeuroDiversity and Autistic Spectrum
Conditions Action Group and I will be informing the relevant Ministers and
Individuals within these organistions of this case and hope urgent actions
and interventions will take place.
I hope to hear you responses ASAP.
Yours Sincerely
Mr Colin Revell
