The Marie Curie Excellence project Historical Ecologies of East African
Landscapes (HEEAL), aims to provide a better understanding of the long-
term environmental history of East Africa through a series of focused
archaeological and bioarchaeological studies of the changing histories of
land use, subsistence strategies, natural resources extraction, dietary
practices, patterns of disease, and trade and exchange across different
parts of Kenya and Tanzania. As part of this interdisciplinary project
three salaried Early Stage Researcher posts, each leading to a PhD, are
now available. These are:
ESR 1: Historical ecology of the 19th century East African caravan trade
ESR 2: Consequences of environmental change for human societies in Eastern
Africa
ESR 3: Geoarchaeology of East African later Holocene landscapes
Salary, which is fixed for the duration of the contract, will be within
the range £21,744 - £23,844 per annum. The posts are fixed term for 3
years and are open only to researchers with <4 years post-graduate
research experience.
