Deputy Editor (maternity cover) - Chemistry World

£35,145 - £39,049 per annum - Cambridge

Chemistry World is the award-winning monthly magazine for chemists, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. It is distributed to more than 45,000 scientists, academics and industry practitioners who trust the publication as an authoritative source of news - accessing it online and through podcasts, as well as its traditional print format.

As Deputy Editor, you will commission and edit articles for our daily news website, as well as taking responsibility for editing at least one of the sections of the magazine edition. Researching and writing news and features on topics related to chemical science, business or policy, you will also help to develop the skills of our in-house reporters, maintain relationships with freelancers and build up useful external contacts.

It's a highly responsible role, in which you'll sometimes have to step in to the Editor's shoes, so relevant writing experience and knowledge of topical developments in the chemical and life sciences will be absolutely essential. You'll also represent us at a variety of scientific conferences and events.

We'll expect you to have a degree or equivalent in a science subject (preferably chemistry or a related area) and the ability to digest and explain complex scientific information. You'll also need to demonstrate strong interpersonal, organisational and managerial skills.

Ref: 07-29.

Benefits include 26 days holiday per annum, contributory pension scheme, free life assurance and private healthcare.

Interview date: 8 June 2007.

As well as sending us your CV and a covering letter that addresses the selection criteria, we would like you to provide a short statement, 300 words maximum, explaining your suitability for the job, together with at least two sample news stories you have written.
