Darwin's Children: Call for expressions of interest

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and 150 years since
the publication of "On the Origin of Species". The Wellcome Trust is inviting initial
expressions of interest for an educational initiative to mark Darwin 200. The ambition is
to produce a series of Darwin-inspired experiments which could be made available to
every schoolchild in the UK. These would emphasise the relationship of Darwin's work
to contemporary biomedical science. Support for teachers in the form of continuing
professional development (CPD) will form an important part of the project so as to
maximise the impact of the resources. Associated publicity through the media or
professional channels could also play a role.

This will be a commissioned project, and bids will be developed with the aid of a third
party project management consultant who will be engaged by the Trust. At this stage
we would like any established organisations who would like to be considered for
inclusion in the bidding process to submit a short preliminary application. This should
be up to two sides of A4, and include a brief statement for each of the following
sections:

1. An outline of your vision of the project.
2. The role that your organisation could play.
3. The other partners that you would need to work with to deliver the project. These
could be named organisations or a category. It would not be necessary to
secure the agreement of an organisation for their name to be included, this is a
prospective proposal.

Bids must be sent electronically to arrive by Friday 25th May to

This call can be forwarded to other relevant parties on an individual basis.

research charity in the world. It funds innovative biomedical research, in the UK and
internationally, spending around 500 million each year to support the brightest
scientists with the best ideas. The Wellcome Trust supports public debate about
