Bursaries for the British Society for History of Science "Outreach Day" 30
June 2007
(see http://www.bshs.org.uk/bshs/outreach/outreach_day_bursaries )
Do you teach or communicate the history of science, technology or medicine
to under-18s or the wider public? Do you want to know more about
cutting edge learning resources and techniques in the field?
If so, you're eligible for a bursary to attend the Outreach Day on Saturday
30 June at the BSHS Annual Conference in Manchester.
As part of the three-day conference, Outreach Day includes three 90-minute
sessions organised by the BSHS Outreach and Education committee,
designed to benefit anyone involved in teaching or communicating the history
of science.
Outreach Day Programme
9:00-10:30 Learning history of science online. Explore the use of e-learning
in history of science, technology and medicine, with specialist experts
speaking about exciting new online resources. These include The Complete
Works of Charles Darwin Online (darwin-online.org.uk), Livingstone
Online: Exploring the Medical Writings of David Livingstone
(www.livingstoneonline.ucl.ac.uk <http://www.livingstoneonline.ucl.ac.uk/> )
and a new set of student research tutorials under development on the history
of electricity.
11:00-12:30 The adventures of an historical object and other stories. See
the results of a pilot project on the creative writing of 'object stories'
as an educational technique in history of science. Focusing upon artefacts
in local museums and drawing on the experience of project participants, you
will be given an opportunity to try writing a short autobiography of a past
objects from science, technology and or medicine and to discuss suitable
educational uses of these narratives.
13:30-15:00 Using role-play to teach the history of medicine: re-enacting
the plague in seventeenth-century York. Try out role-play as a way of
engaging young people with medical history! This session is a dramatised
enquiry into the York plague epidemic of 1631. A number of historical
characters will be interviewed by city aldermen, the lead alderman being a
scripted 'actor', the audience making up the remaining interrogators. At
the BAAS Festival of Science at York in September 2007 this role-play will
be recreated for participation by children aged 9 and over.
The day's programme also includes a public event on science and film (begins
15:30; details to be announced) and a guided walk around
Manchester's scientific and industrial heritage, conducted by local
volunteers (begins 17:00)
About the bursaries
While the registration fee for Saturday's events (including lunch,
refreshments and access to all sessions) is £46, bursary recipients will pay
only a nominal fee of £5 towards catering costs. The £41 bursaries will be
