My late Mother (on whom be peace) always swore by Horn & Hoof for her
splended roses ...
Much of what looks like superstition to townies and pedants is actually the
result of practical experience. Wasn't there some belief that certain seeds
should only be sown at night - naked ? Or that you should test the soil by
sitiing on it with no clothes on. One can see what the puritan fathers might
have got a bit uppy at this but in the absence of max & min thermometers
this would ensure a certain minimal night-time air temperature at the very
least ....
