I would be most grateful if this information could be circulated as
widely as possible.
We have a number of duplicate maps donated to us a few years ago by the
Ordnance Survey. They were produced by the Directorate of Overseas
Survey / OS and cover several areas of the world, but mainly parts of
Africa. All the maps were new unsold copies that the OS no longer had
space to store and were used in part to update our map collection here
at Southampton. The remainder were put into storage with the intention
of being identified, listed and offered around the mapping community
when time allowed. However you can guess that the spare time to do this
never happened, so we have a quantity of around 300 to 400 maps which we
must now move as the storage area is to be used for other purposes. We
are unable to find an alternative place to keep these maps, so disposal
is the only course of action open to us, we would welcome any interest
in taking these maps to save them from the skip. We have coverage of
areas of the following countries:
Gold Coast at 1:62,500, Uganda at 1:50,000, Nigeria at 1:125,00;
1:100,000; 1:250,000, Tanganyika/Tanzania at 1:125,000; 1:100,000,
Zambia at 1:50,000; 1:250,000, Ethiopia at 1:50,000; 1:250,000,
Sudan at 1:100,000 1:250,000, Malawi at 1:50,000, Ghana at 1:62,500;
1:50,000, Botswana at 1:50,000, Canada at 1:250,000; 1:250,000,
Switzerland at 1:50,000, etc.
Dates vary from country to country and go from 1924 up to the late
1980's, mostly in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's.
We are being pressured to move the maps within a couple of weeks, so any
help you could offer to save these from the bin would be appreciated.
Best wishes
