Dear Adele,
We base our payments to freelancers on a rate of £25 an hour for
delivery and £12.50 an hour for prep. This is based on the rate
received by arts tutors employed by our Arts Development Team within the
Council, and includes on costs such as NI. I personally feel it's
better to work on an hourly rather an daily rate as we often workshops
that are only 2 hours long instead of a whole day. This means that our
freelancers are paid fairly (we hope) for the work that they actually
do, and that the preparation time they put in is also fully recognised.
We would also, obviously, cover the costs of any materials they
require.
Hope that helps.

Dear Adele,
Many institutions - even the most prominently the biggest and most
popular (without mentioning names) do not in practice pay their artist
educator freelancers as professionals. However, in theory at least,
everybody should want to and according to ACE, a day rate for a
freelancer/ artist/educator should be an absolute minimum of £180.00,
raising with level of experience. Artist Information Company has done
extensive research into the subject and gives examples and notes to best
practice via the link:

and straight to sample rates via:

It IS possible, and has to be possible, to pay artists/freelancers
properly (in respect of their often extensive experience, the
responsibilites within the job we hire them to do and the fact that
they have no security and are reliable for own tax, pensions and NI
contributions) however, in order for monies to be made available it has
to be considered at point of fund-raising/planning the budget - but then
and there, it should be easily argued for.
best wishes,
lilli
