This study presents a detailed archaeological account of the changing
landscapes of the islands of the eastern Caribbean between the early 17th
century and the 19th century, with particular reference to the history of
sugar cultivation. Presenting the results of landscape survey conducted on
the islands of St Kitts and St Lucia, the study represents an extended
case study in the archaeology of British colonialism, and contributes to
the growing field of Caribbean historical archaeology. Tracing a sequence
of landscape change from 17th-century enclosures to early sugar landscapes
and to 18th-century landscapes of ‘improvement’, the book considers how
the perspectives of landscape archaeology can be used to contribute to the
study of the histories, geographies and legacies of colonialism.
